Mrs. Emma Lowery McClain

Mrs. Emma Lou Lowery McClain left this world for her Heavenly home on October 23, 2023, at the age of 93. Mrs. Emma was born near Taylorsville, MS, on September 18, 1930, to the late M.D. and Ola Runnels Lowery. At the age of 16, she married her beloved husband, William H. McClain on October 19, 1946, and they moved to their farm in Clay County, MS, where they were dairy farmers for many years. They had 8 children. After her husband of 26 years passed away, Emma fulfilled his long-time desire for her to finish high school. Emma received her GED and proceeded to continue her education by attending East Mississippi Community College. Emma entered the workforce at the age of 41. She was employed at Monte Glove Company in Pheba, MS, Big Yank in West Point, MS, PEP Industries in Houston, MS, and Kroger in Starkville, MS. She retired in 2003 and spent many years volunteering to help the elderly in her community, driving them to church, doctors’ appointments, or other activities. Her compassion for helping people continued as she also spent many years serving her church, Enon Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School or Training Union, serving as the church treasurer, and many other duties. Emma was a fabulous cook, and she enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, gardening, and many other activities that she learned growing up during the Great Depression. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Emma was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Joyce McClain, a son, William Ricky McClain, a grandson, Larry Gene Hill, Jr., three sisters, infant Montory Lowery, Bertie Lou Craft (Evon), and Lillian Finnegan (Freddie), four brothers, Edward Lowery (Billie), Charles Lowery (Bobbie), Jimmy Lowery, Robert Lowery, a sister-in-law Rhonda Lowery, and a brother-in-law Dale Frazier. Left to cherish her memories are her children, Erma Hill (Charles) Vicksburg, Mary Box (Charles Jefferson), Starkville, Margaret Harrington (Paul), Clermont, FL, Rodger McClain (Christina), Pascagoula, Judy Sims (Perry), Amory, Debbie Sims (Kerry), Tishomingo, her brothers Marlin Lowery (Sarah), Goodman, MS, Paul Lowery (Ruby), Florence, MS, and Terrell Lowery, Florence, MS, her sister Marilyn Frazier, Florence, MS, two sisters-in-law, Audie Lowery, Florence, MS, and Mary Lou Lowery, Taylorsville, MS, 18 grandchildren, Charles William Hill (DeAnn), Scott Hill, John Hill (Rhonda), C.J. Box (Kat), Alisha Box Bennett (Grady), Derek Hill (Toni), Lisa Hill (Mehdi Isvandi), Cooper McClain, Caleb McClain, Brett Clifton (Emelia), Matt Clifton (Hayley), Brooke Clifton Myers (Travis), Morgan McClain, Corey Sims (Tamara), Jamey Sims Murphree (Ben), Jeremy Sims (Katherine), Eric Sims (Meggie), and Andrew Sims (Brooks), her 16 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Funeral services will be Thursday, October 26, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Ben Murphree officiating and assisted by Reverend Donald Pounders. Burial will follow in Old Montpelier Cemetery near Montpelier, MS. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements. Honorary Pallbearers will be Nurses & Staff of Gentiva Hospice, and Her Church Family at Enon Baptist Church.
