James "Jim" Small Ross

James Small Ross, 87, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2018, at his home in West Point. He was born in Jackson on November 1, 1931 to Thomas Mason Ross, Sr. and Eleanor Small Ross. Jim was a member of Jackson's Central High School Class of 1951. He served in the Army for 2 years as a Sgt. in the 31st Infantry Division. After his discharge, he enrolled at Mississippi State University where he a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and he lettered in both football and track. It was at Mississippi State that he met and married his wife, Ann Miller Ross. They were married on May 26, 1956. After graduating in January 1957, Jim went to work for Crawford and Company Insurance Adjusters. Later he was in the family automobile business in Louisiville and Eupora. In 1970, he began his career in the furniture manufacturing industry in the Tupelo area where he worked until his retirement in 1993. Jim was a member of the First United Methodist Church in West Point. He was devoted to his family. His favorite pastimes were playing golf and watching his grandchildren participate in all of their sporting activities. He was an avid supporter of all Mississippi State sports. Funeral services will be Friday, December 21, 2018, at 2:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church in West Point with Reverend Darian Duckworth officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point, MS. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements. Jim is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann, his daughter, Cheryl Ross Cork (Steve) of Mooreville; his son, Ben Ross (Beth) of Hernando; Five Grandsons, Colin Cork of Kalamazoo, MI, Cade Cork of Mooreville, Nathan Ross (Erin) of Pontotoc, Jackson Ross of Hernando and Alex Taylor of Hernando; his two sisters, Betsy Ross Favara of Jackson, TN and Elizabeth Ross Smith of Mt. Vernon, OR; and a very special cousin, Maridel Ingram (Fred) of Jackson. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his two brothers, Thomas Mason Ross, Jr. and Micky H. Ross. Palbearers will be his grandsons and his caregiver and friend, Dewitt Cooperwood. Honorary Pallbearers will be George Barry, Stokes Smith, Jimmy McCain, Carrol Garrett, Adrian Dale, Dan Morgan, and James Daniels. Memorials may be made to Sanctuary Hospice, P.O.
