Leora Hodnett

Leora Hodnett, 84, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, at her home in Cedar Bluff. Leora was born on June 16, 1941, in Clay County, to the late William Stevens and Elsie Cliett Lofton. Leora lived a life filled with dedication to her family and her community. For three decades, Leora served as a Secretary for the Clay County School System. Her commitment to her work reflected her strong sense of responsibility and care for the community she called home. Beyond her professional life, she was a member of Palestine Methodist Church. Leora had a deep love for vegetable gardening. She was also an accomplished cook and brought joy to those fortunate enough to gather around her table. A lifelong fan of the Atlanta Braves, she delighted in following their games and cheering them on. Leora also cherished quiet moments spent reading. Leora married J. T. Hodnett on August 15, 1959, in Houston, and he preceded her in death on February 24, 2017. Above all else, Leora was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her warmth and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew her. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Deborah Watson. Visitation will be on Saturday, May 23, 2026, from 10:00-11:00 A.M. at Palestine Methodist Church in Montpelier. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 A.M. with Dr. James Towery officiating and assisted by Reverend Carey Sutphin. Burial will follow in Palestine Cemetery in Montpelier. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements. Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Hodnett of Pheba, and Kelly Gaskin (Robert) of Cedar Bluff: four sons, Raymon Hodnett (Teresa) of West Point, David Hodnett of Cedar Bluff, Alan Hodnett of Cedar Bluff, and Terry Hodnett (Julie) of Maben: eleven grandchildren, Jamie Lee (Matt) of Hamilton, Ashley Harpole (Jeremy) of Pheba, Tyler Hodnett (Alexis) of Cedar Bluff, Shea Hodnett (Jonathan) of Pheba, Walter Hodnett (Ally) of Pheba, Emily Bullard of Florida, James Scott (Maci) of Pheba, Crystal Faulkner (Steven) of Dahlonega, Georgia, Wesley Gaskin of Cedar Bluff, Brady Gaskin of Cedar Bluff, and Sophie Gaskin of Cedar Bluff: eleven great-grandchildren: one sister, Rose Ann Wilson (Jack) of Cedar Bluff: one brother, Russell Lofton of Pheba, and a number of nieces, nephews, and other of extended family. Pallbearers will be James Scott, Tyler Hodnett, Walker Hodnett, Brady Gaskin, Wesley Gaskin, and Kyle Scott Honorary Pallbearers will be Bill Caldwell, Beverly McKinney, Elizabeth Deans, Rebecca Stanford, CFNP, and her many friends at Palestine Methodist Church.
