Mrs. Loretta Woods McGarity

Mrs. Loretta Woods McGarity, 85, passed away on December 11, 2023, at her home in West Point, Mississippi. Loretta was born on August 6, 1938, in Lamar County, Alabama, to the late Sanders and Rigia Gosa Woods. She moved to West Point in 1955. She worked as a laborer for Swift and Company, where she met her future husband, Mr. John. She drove a bus for the West Point School District. She began her lifelong career with the United States Postal Service in West Point a career that spanned 44 years. She was a dedicated and faithful servant to the Lord at West End Baptist Church in West Point, Mississippi; where she played the piano for 57 years. She also taught the Martha Sunday School Class. She enjoyed playing the piano and taught piano for many years. She enjoyed, listening to music, reading, watching her hummingbirds, and traveling with her family. She married John Earl McGarity, Jr. on February 6, 1959, in Gattman, MS and together they shared 49 years. He predeceased her on April 6, 2008. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Blanche Cole and Wanetta McGibbony and four brothers, Robert, Darrell, Cherry, and Jerry Woods. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 14, 2023, from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at West End Baptist Church in West Point and then again on Friday, from 1:00-2:00 P.M. Funeral services will be on Friday, December 15, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. at West End Baptist Church, West Point, Mississippi with Reverend Mike Mathena officiating and assisted by Dr. James Towery. Burial will follow in Memorial Garden Cemetery in West Point, Mississippi. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements. Survivors include one daughter, Ginger M. Smith (Jeff) of Booneville: one son, Rocky L. McGarity (Michelle) of Wilmer, Alabama: two grandsons, John Caden and Jameson Taylor McGarity, both of Wilmer, Alabama: three sisters, Laynetta Gray Gilliland of Beaverton, Alabama, Genetta Ray Easterwood (Tom) of Beaverton, Alabama, and Barbara Clark (Ronnie) of Jasper, Alabama: one brother, Gary Neil Woods (Cindy) of Beaverton ,Alabama, six sisters-in-law, Shelby Jean Mathis of Grants Pass, Oregon, Rebecca Hemphill (James) of West Point, Sue Wyrick of Columbus, Mary Lois Anderson of Sumiton, Alabama, Virginia Woods of Parish, Alabama, and Julia Faye Woods of Adamsville, Alabama: three brothers-in-law, Leon McGarity (Barbara) of Columbus, Paul McGarity of Cedar Bluff, and David McGarity (Diane) of West Point: special niece and caregiver, Marietta Kay McGibbony Craven of West Point, and a host of nieces and nephews and other extended family. Pallbearers will be John Caden McGarity, Jameson McGarity, Brandon McGarity, Bill Ladd, Claude Cartee, Jr., and Donnie Kisner.
