Mrs. Marianne S. Middleton

On October 9, 2022, at 4:50 am, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, our Mother, affectionately known as Granny, Marianne Middleton, was ushered into heaven by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was 90 years old. Visitation will be at Calvert Funeral Home in West Point on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm followed by a celebration of Mom at 1:00 pm, from Calvert Funeral Home Chapel, led by her grandson, Pastor Jason Middleton. Marianne Sisson Middleton was born in Maben, on December 28, 1931, to Oris Sisson and Alta Mae McGarr (Aldridge). She was raised and cared for by Lee J. McGarr, her mother, Alta Mae Aldridge, her Grandmother, Mattie McGarr, and Lee Roy and Emmitte McGarr. They all were loving influences on her life. As a young girl, she met Virgil Carver Middleton of Alva. They were married at the Carroll County Courthouse, on February 25, 1950, and began lives that would influence and be loved by so many. They both loved us very much. She lost her love, Sheriff Virgil Middleton on November 19, 1981, but she continued to live life and love her five children: Curtis Middleton, wife Jamie, of West Point their sons Brian (Becky) and Jason (Tiffany), Margaret Brown, husband Mike, of Cedar Bluff, their children, Michael (Jody), Alan (Suzanne), Jenny (Jonathan), Linda Foster, husband Myron, of West Point their children Tona and Whitt (Kayla), Janet Middleton of Starkville, her son Brandon (Ashley) and Carl Middleton, wife Jill, of West Point, their children Daniel, Carleigh Anne (Blake) John Carver (engaged Anna Kathryn) and McKenzie. She was known to us as Momma, but to 30 grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Granny and Gran. Her family was everything to her. She loved with all of her heart. Every time she held a newly born grandchild, she could see the blessing that started with her love for Virgil. Momma and Daddy started a lifetime of public service when he was elected Sheriff of Clay County in 1968. She began to work in the Tax Assessor’s office and was later elected as the Tax Assessor and Collector of Clay County, an office she held until she retired in 1995. She loved the people of Clay County and enjoyed serving them. She loved her staff and all the county officials who worked in the courthouse. What she didn’t like was public speaking and always worried about having an opponent when she ran for office every 4 years. Fortunately, that was something she did not have to worry about as she rarely had someone run against her. Momma didn’t have a lot of hobbies but did have a lot of loves. She loved going on “girls trips” with her daughters. She loved her sons taking her out to dinner. She loved going to Mississippi State Football games. Mom loved good food. The problem with taking her out to dinner was she had to greet all the people in the restaurant, so dinner would last for a while. She loved family gatherings, such as Christmas, where there would be close to 50 children and grandchildren. She loved West End Baptist Church. She loved the people of West End, and she loved her Savior Jesus Christ. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Brian Middleton, Michael Brown, Alan Brown, Whitt Foster, Brandon Griggs, Daniel Middleton, and John Carver Middleton We would also like to recognize her caregiver Mary Reese and friend, Jessyce Johnson, the many doctors and nurses that took care of Momma over the years, her coworkers in the Tax Collectors Office and the Clay County Courthouse and the many people she served in Clay County.
