Mrs. Mary Jim Holmes

Mary Jim Holmes, a cherished resident of West Point, peacefully transitioned to her heavenly home on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at the age of 93. Known for her boundless love and compassion, Mary Jim was a devoted, wife, mother, sister, aunt, and beloved “Mama Jim.” Born on May 10, 1931, to Desmer and Elisha Hawkins, Mary Jim had a life marked by service and care for others. She graduated from West Point High School in 1950 and pursued her passion for nursing, at the Baptist School of Nursing in Memphis, graduating as a registered nurse in 1953. On May 15, 1954, she married the love of her life, Jimmy Holmes of West Point, with whom she shared 60 wonderful years of marriage. Mary Jim expressed her love through cooking and caring for others. During weekday lunchtimes, you never knew who Jimmy Holmes might bring home from the stockyard for one of her home-cooked meals. She made the best food, cookies, and cakes for church members, friends, and the firefighters next door; no one ever went without a sweet treat or a meal. Her dedication and passion for care giving was evident throughout her lifetime as she helped raise her three younger siblings to having a 42 year career in the hospital. After retiring, she never stopped nursing, continuing to care for family, grandchildren, and the elderly. Although she did not have any biological grandchildren, she adopted many and was affectionately named “Mama Jim” by the Hughes family and everyone they knew. She never missed a Grandparents Day at Oak Hill or dance recitals for the grandchildren she helped raise. Her legacy of love and service will live on through her family, friends, and the countless people she fed and cared for throughout her life. Mary Jim is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jimmy Holmes. She is survived by her only daughter, Jimmie Carol Harris; her siblings, Brice Hawkins, Bernice Hawkins (Martha Ann), and Margaret Bennet (Wayne), many loving nieces and nephews, and her adopted family, Dud and Sally Hughes of Petal, Lori Fletcher (Scotty) of Poplarville, Tricia Hughes of Petal, Ty Hughes (Danielle) of Spanish Fort, Alabama, and Jamey and Katie Ballard of West Point. A Celebration of Mary Jim’s life will be held at Calvert Funeral Home in West Point on Saturday June 1, 2024, with visitation from 1:00-2:00 P.M. and the Funeral Service at 2:00 from Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Dale Funderburg officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements. Pallbearers will be Rusty Cox, Bill Cox, Ty Hughes, Scotty Fletcher, Jamey Ballard, and Chip Ballard. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kevin Hawkins, Todd Hawkins, Keith Hawkins, Jay Hawkins, and Mary Ingram's Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church in West Point. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Latoria Bennamon and Sheila Wilson for their compassionate and dedicated care.
