Mrs. Miller Raye Young

Mrs. Miller Raye Young, 90, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2023, at Generations Senior Living in Saltillo. Mrs. Raye was born on February 1, 1932, in Mayhew, to the late Joe and Rosie Rambo. She worked for Mississippi Valley Gas and Montgomery Flower Shop. She married Billy Young on July 1, 1949, in Aberdeen and he predeceased her on June 22, 2018. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in West Point. Ms. Young or Miller Raye, as she was addressed by so many people in the community, was simply known as “Mamaw” to family and close friends. Her humble beginnings with a dozen siblings in the Depression-era South, indoctrinated her into a lifetime of focus on the family and service to others. Once she discovered the love of her life in a slender young man with an easy grin, she knew once again that creating and nurturing a family with Billy would prove the joy and pride of her life. Miller Raye was the consummate mother and wife; a disciplinarian and taskmaster with kids and chores, yet a sweet, and consoling spirit when a child’s heart or hurt needed a soft touch. She found her comfort in a myriad of roles – whether baking loaves of her famous bread, or joining Billy to watch a frosty sunrise from a November deer stand, or later that same evening, kicking up her heels at a local Square Dance. She loved the company of friends and family around the table, sharing a meal, or getting into a feisty game of Shanghai Run. Her quick wit and hearty laughter always delighted her guests and she worked tirelessly in her home to ensure the full satisfaction of an appetite or the gentile comforting of those who were weary. Though sorely missed, Mamaw has certainly earned her spot in Heaven and has forever etched her names upon our hearts. Graveside services will be on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. from Greenwood Cemetery in West Point with Reverend Bob Rambo officiating. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements. Survivors include two daughters, Kaye Judson of West Point and Sherri Carr (Randall) of Knoxville, Tennessee: one son, Bill Young, Jr. (Lillian) of Tuscaloosa, Alabama: eight grandchildren, Brad Judson (Molly) of Iverness, Sara Knighten of West Point, Trish Cooper (Chad) of Starkville, Becca Kelly (Ryan) of Knoxville, Tennessee, Carson Young (Claire) of Trussville, Alabama, Cole Edwards (Joy) of Knoxville, Tennessee, Barton Young (Kristi) of Kelly, Wyoming,, and Whitney Cortez (Doug) of Holly Springs, North Carolina, and fourteen great-grandchildren, Hamp and Howie Judson, Cole and Brody Knighten, Mason and Olivia Kelly, Bodie and Kellen Edwards, Max and Miles Cortez, Addison and Luke Young, Monroe Cooper, and John Hollis Cooper. Pallbearers will be Brad Judson, Chad Cooper, Ryan Kelly, Carson Young, Barton Young, and Larry Hazelwood.
