Mrs. Shirley Stewart

After a life well-lived, Shirley Coleman Stewart passed away in her home on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at the age of 85. She was born in Montpelier in February, 1940, to the late Hallie and Louise Coleman. After graduating from West Point High School, she married her high school sweetheart, the late Travis Wayne Stewart, Sr. and raised four children. Shirley made many lifelong friends during her working years at Babcock and Wilcox and Mississippi State University. After retirement, she enjoyed birthday & holiday picnics, Stewart Retreat trips with her children and grandchildren, McGee family reunions, attending Church services of various faiths, and reading books from Bryan Public Library. Always very social, Shirley was dubbed “the Butterfly” by a good friend who enjoyed watching her flutter from table to table visiting with friends while listening to local country & gospel music talent at TAG’s Surf and Turf and Sparta Opry. Late at night when the house was quiet, she played the piano beautifully, with sheet music and also by ear. She was creative, quick witted, and had an uncanny ability of reaching out if she thought you needed a friendly ear. Many of us will miss those late night phone conversations and the good times we shared. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Roe Coleman. A short graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at 3:00 P.M. from Palestine Cemetery in Montpelier with Dr. James Towery officiating and assisted by Sister Gay Stockton. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements. Survivors include one daughter Terrie Stewart Walters (John), three sons: Wayne Stewart (Karen), Ronnie Stewart (Lorie Palmertree), Shea Stewart (Mandy), ten grandchildren: seventeen great-grandchildren, and a brother-in-law, Larry Stewart (Sandra). Pallbearers will be Travis Stewart, III, Lantz Stewart, Cole Stewart, Eli Stewart, Caleb Stewart, Trevor Mitchell, Aaron Nash, and Nathan Nash.
