Mr. Jerald L. "Jerry" Smith

July 30, 1938 - July 29, 2015

Mr. Jerald L. "Jerry" Smith, 76, passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at his home in West Point. Mr. Jerry was born July 30, 1938, in Normal, Illinois, the son of the late Lyle James and Mary Vivian Etcheson Smith. He held his Bachelor's Degree from Mississippi State University and was a Veteran of the United States Army. He was a cattleman that raised beef cattle. He owned and operated his trucking company. He worked as a Safety Officer for Royal Trucking in West Point. He was a member and Elder of First Presbyterian Church EPC, where he was elected as Elder Emeritus. He was also a Gideon. He married Janice McClure Bowen Smith on April 10, 1995, in Niceville, FL, and she passed away September 2, 2010. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Brother: Freeman Smith. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 1, 2015, at 2:00 P.M. from First Presbyterian Church EPC in West Point with the Reverend Brandon Bates officiating and assisted by Reverend Steve Davis. Burial will follow in Oddfellows Rest Cemetery in Aberdeen. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include Step-Daughter: Julie Casper (Michael) of Atlanta, GA; Step-Son: Nolan Bowen (Shelly) of Caledonia; One Sister, Janet D. Smith of Columbus, Ohio; One Brother, Craig Smith (Sheila) of Benton, Ark.; and Several Nieces and Nephews. Pallbearers will be Andy Danovsky, Daniel Litwiller, Marshall Litwiller, Nolan Bowen, Michael Casper, Gene Brown, Jimmy Littlefield, and Wayne Stewart. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Gordon Hazard, Dr. T.N. Braddock, Dr. John Cox, Dr. John Lee, Mr. Leroy Atkinson, Mr. L.E. Ray, and His Caregivers: Ann Smith, Frances Jones, and Mary Westbrook. Memorials may be made to Palmer Home for Children, P.O. Box 746, Columbus, MS 39701 or to The Gideons International, P.O. Box 661, West Point, MS 39773. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at Calvert Funeral Home and from 1:00-2:00 P.M. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church EPC in West Point.
