Mrs. Mary Emma Houser

Mrs. Mary Emma Houser, 91, passed away on February 6, 2018, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Mrs. Mary Emma was born on January 13, 1927, in Clay County, the daughter of the late Jesse James and Margaret Annie Joiner Young. Mrs. Mary Emma was the second of five children. She was employeed at Knickerbocker Manufacturing in West Point at the age of 15 and retired from Artex of Mississippi in 1989. Mrs. Mary Emma married Dallas Harley Houser on October 20, 1956, in Clay County and he preceded her in death on June 5, 1974. After the tragic death of her son, Matt, Mrs. Mary Emma spent all of her time caring for her daughter, Malinda, who had gone blind and been diagnosed with renal failure. Mrs. Mary Emma transported Malinda to doctor's appointments, read to her, took her to church, got her to dialysis, cooked and cleaned for her, and eventually celebrated Malinda's kidney and pancreas transplant. After which, Malinda was able to work. Mrs. Mary Emma kept children in her home in Cedar Bluff until 2014 when her health began to decline. In 2015, Mrs. Mary Emma moved in with Malinda and her husband, Charles W. (Woody) Scarborough in Brandon, where she lived until her last days at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Mrs. Mary Emma's spiritual heart always belonged with her church family at West End Baptist Church in West Point, but her health transition took her to a loving body of Christian believers at Oakdale Baptist Church in Brandon. There she was lovingly known as "Momma." In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, James Matthew “Matt” Houser, Two Sisters: Elizabeth Ann Fulgham and Inez Irene Williams, and a brother: James L. (Bud) Young. Funeral services will be Friday, February 9, 2018, at 2:00 P.M. from Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Rick Henson officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Garden Cemetery in West Point. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include One Daughter: Malinda Scarborough (Woody) of Brandon; One Sister, Elaine Merchant and One Brother: Gailon Young (Maudie) both of West Point; and a number of Nieces and Nephews. Pallbearers will be Jerry Bowen, Darryl Shows, Murray Shows, Cody Shows, Tommy Merchant, Stephen Young, Jesse Young,and Joyner Williams.
