Leon Betterton, 88, passed away, on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at North MS Medical Center, in West Point, MS. Bascum Leon Betterton was born July 29, 1925 in Sabougla in Calhoun County Mississippi to the late Lillie Mae Hollis and Bascum Creekmore "Doc" Betterton. Leon Betterton was a member of First Presbyterian Church, EPC. He was a Veteran of U. S. Navy having served during WWII. Leon Betterton married Inez Holden Betterton on November 2, 1946, in Bruce, MS. He worked as a Service Manager for Tom Ross Motor Company for 20 years and then Mitchell Buick for 20 plus years and then his own business in 1997-2002. He was an past member and honorary member of the Gideons International. Mr. Betterton was an Elder Emeritus First Presbyterian Church, EPC. He received the Victory Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the American Area Campaign Ribbon and the Asiatic Ribbon with one star. Seving on the U. S. S. Howard W. Gilmore. Leon was elected a deacon of the Baptist Church was ordained in Hondurus on a mission trip. He was a member of Eupora Masonic Lodge F & AM The Passions in his life were his were God's Word, his family, watching his grandsons play sports from Little League to College and his garden that he shared with everybody. Funeral services will be Sunday, November 10, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, EPC with the Reverend Brandon Bates officiating, assisted by Reverend Steve Davis. Burial will follow in Memorial Garden Cemetery in West Point. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include wife of 67 years, Inez Holden Betterton of West Point; his daughter, Sandra Murray (Gene) of West Point; two grandchildren; Andy Murray (Rosonna) and Jonathan Murray (Angelique); four great grandchildren; Adrianne, Christina, Dakota, and Robert and four great-great grandchildren Logan, Landon, Luke, and Ethan; one sister, Glenda Norwood of Belfontaine; one brother, Jesse W. Betterton (Ruby) of Columbus. An infant sister preceded him in death. Pallbearers will be Anthony Norwood, Jimmy Philley, Davd Betterton, Ronnie Miller, Jonathan Murray, Andy Murray, Jimmy Clark, and Robert Harris. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. James R. Powell, Bill Cade, Frank Swoope, Ed Swoope, Chris Hurst, Ricky Dill, Mike Matthews, Willie Gene Simpson, Dr. Edwin Rowe, Don Bartelt, Creed Massey and The Men's Sunday School Class, at First Presbyteriain Church, EPC. Memorials may be made to Gideons International, P. O. Box 661, West Point, MS 39773 or to the First Presbyterian Church, EPC, P. O. Box 366, West Point, MS. Visitation will be Saturday, 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. and Sunday one hour at Calvert Funeral Home.
