Mrs. Sandra McCord Wood

January 11, 1935 - February 18, 2018

Mrs. Sandra McCord Wood, 83, passed away on February 18, 2018, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point. Mrs. Sandra was born January 11, 1935, in Nashville, TN, the daughter of the late Clyde Fountain, Sr. and Mary Louise Eagan McCord. Sandra graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Peabody University in Nashville, later earning a Master’s degree and an Educational Specialist degree from Columbia University. She devoted her entire adult life to early childhood education through teaching, training future teachers, and the development of instructional manuals and materials. She was an Early Childhood Educator both in Nashville, TN, and Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was a member of the South Carolina Kindergarten Curriculum Committee and was Elected as Teacher of the Year for her district in South Carolina. While teaching in South Carolina, Sandra modeled teaching lessons used in the University Systems of South Carolina in Early Childhood Education Courses. She and her husband were members of McKendree United Methodist Church in Nashville, TN, where they spent many years as preschool Sunday School teachers. They also wrote and published literature used in the United Methodist Church. Upon retirement, Sandra and her husband volunteered with a program to assist young adults in obtaining their GED. She married Dr. William H. Wood on June 11, 1970, in Nashville, TN. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Brother: Clyde Fountain McCord, Jr. Graveside services will be Thursday, February 22, 2018, at 1:30 P.M. from Red Bay City Cemetery in Red Bay, AL, with Reverend Darian Duckworth officiating. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include Husband Dr. William H. Wood of West Point; One Son, Dr. William D. Wood, II (Gillian) of Oxford, United Kingdom; One Sister, Marion McCord of Nashville, TN and her Sister-in-Law: Kay Wood Powell of West Point. Honorary Pallbearers will be Her Friends at McKendree United Methodist Church in Nashville, TN.
