It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Bryan Bates on July 8, 2024, at the age of 54, at his home in West Point, Mississippi. Bryan was born on October 10, 1969, in Casper, Wyoming to James Bates and Marlys Coker Baker. Bryan grew up in Macon, Mississippi, where he attended and graduated from Central Academy. Bryan developed a remarkable zeal for cooking as a child while spending time in the kitchen with his mother. As a young adult, he cultivated that passion for culinary arts. His determination, dedication, and passion aided in obtaining positions such as chef at The Elegant Farmer, Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi, and as an executive chef at Tupelo Country Club. His culinary adventures took him all over the country spanning from Oregon and California, then back to Mississippi. As Bryan mastered his craft, each experience influenced his culinary style along the way. Bryan’s passion for cooking brought joy and flavor to countless gatherings and celebrations. Bryan also enjoyed concerts from many artists, especially The Grateful Dead. He also enjoyed camping and engaging in activities in the great outdoors. Another of Bryan’s pastimes he enjoyed were movies and the film industry. He even once served as a stuntman in a movie filmed in Canton, MS. Bryan is preceded in death by his mother, Marlys Coker Baker; his father, James Bates; one brother, Steven Bates; and his aunt, Nettie Catherine Horner.
