Mr. James Douglas Martin

James Douglas Martin, 30, of Cedar Bluff, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. He was affectionately called Baby James, which began in school as he started driving, and Uncle Rick, a name he gave himself for his nephews, nieces, and friend’s children to call him. James was born on February 25, 1996, in Columbus, to Douglas Ellis and Susan Denise Cartee Martin. James was loved and liked by many throughout his life. He liked to joke around and have fun with all ages. He never met a stranger and could talk about most subjects with anyone. He loved working in the oil field in West Texas, New Mexico, Montana, along with several other states, normally as a frac technician. He was responsible for monitoring and maintaining the quality of water to ensure efficient and safe fracking processes. He loved purchasing and working on vehicles, including rebuilding motors. He worked locally at Import Doctors of Columbus, after his motor vehicle accident in 2022. In order to keep living and recovering from things that should have knocked him down, he was a “fighter”! He always remembered to be our bumblebee and he “flew”, defying all odds. He was loved by so very many and will be missed dearly. James attended Enon Baptist Church in Cedar Bluff. He loved outdoor activities, such as hunting, fishing, boating on the river, and helping friends work on their vehicles. He loved children of all ages and always considered them his family. His love extended to four legged creatures as well. As a young boy, even growing into a young man, he wanted to bring every stray animal he found home and try to convince his family to keep them all. James had the biggest, most giving, largest loving heart of anyone we know. Therefore, it was no surprise that he had begun discussing with his family about being an organ donor in order to help others. He gave hope and saved lives as we all said goodbye. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, James “Bud” Cartee, his paternal grandparents, Elmer and Eileen Ellis Martin, and other loving aunts, uncles, and great-grandparents. Visitation will be Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 12:00-2:00 P.M. at Calvert Funeral Home in West Point. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 P.M. from Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Scott Griffin officiating and assisted by Reverend Donald Pounders. Burial will follow in Cairo Cemetery in Cedar Bluff. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements. Survivors include his son, due in November, Briggins James Martin of Denham Springs, Louisiana: his mother, Susan Denise Cartee Martin of Cedar Bluff: his father, Douglas Martin (Rebecca) of Columbus: one sister, Sierra Winston (Jarrett) of Panama City, Florida: one brother, Jonathan Martin of West Point: two step-sisters, Kaitlin Nixon (Case) of Northport, Alabama and Kade Kimbrell (Cody) of Berry, Alabama: one step-brother, John Eaton of Northport, Alabama, maternal grandmother, Margie Cartee of Cedar Bluff, and a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and other extended family. Pallbearers will be Jonathan Martin, Jarrett Winston, John Eaton, Hayden Pate, Chase Thompson, Ryan Perry, Deante Walker, and Bentley Imes Ferguson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jason C. Wilson, his many friends at Enon Baptist Church, Staff of Legacy of Hope, Doctors, Nurses, and Staff of Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital, Doctors, Nurses, and Staff of North Mississippi Medical Center, both in West Point and Tupelo, and the Staff of Outpatient Physical Therapy North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.
