Janice Thomas May

–

West Point, Mississippi

Janice Thomas May, age 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point. She was born on December 4, 1934, to the late Fabus and Lucille Thomas in Clay County. She was a graduate of Clay High School.

Janice was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 71 years, Ubes May Jr. The two were married on February 26, 1954, beginning a lifelong love story that was a beautiful testament to devotion and commitment. Early in their marriage, Junior’s work with Western Geophysical took the young couple throughout the southeastern United States. During their first five years of marriage, they moved a remarkable 26 times before returning to West Point, where they settled and raised their family.

Mrs. May worked for Mississippi Valley Gas Company, now known as Atmos Energy, for more than 30 years before retiring. She was also a devoted member of West End Baptist Church for 72 years, where she faithfully served as a Sunday School teacher and nursery worker.

Janice’s life was marked by a deep love for the Lord and an unwavering love for her family. She found joy in the simple blessings of life, especially sewing and gardening. Her greatest joy, however, was the family she loved so dearly and the legacy of faith and love she leaves behind.

She is survived by her son, Keith May of Starkville; daughter, Kathy (Jim) Marshall of West Point; grandchildren, Mark Huffman of West Point, Jana Haggard of Mooreville, Lisa (Josh) Read of Columbus, Brittany (Ethan) Mayo of Lexington, South Carolina, Jimmy (Heather) Marshall of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Jared (Rachel) Marshall of Dayton, Tennessee; great-grandchildren, Alex and Ava Haggard, Hadley and Lexi Read, Callie Marshall, and Jacob and Jolyn Marshall; brother, Glenn (Betty) Thomas; brother-in-law, Adrian May; sisters-in-law, Betty May and Linda May; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by special friends and caregivers, Kay and Randy Craven, whose love and care were a blessing to her and her family.

In addition to her husband, Junior, Mrs. May was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Roger Huffman; daughter-in-law, Myra May; granddaughter, Heather Catchings; grandson-in-law, Rick Haggard; and brother, Earl (Dorothy) Thomas.

Also thank you to the North Mississippi Home Health and Hospice Service for their wonderful caregivers.

Visitation will be held at West End Baptist Church in West Point on August 15, 2026, from 10:00–11:00 A.M., followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 A.M. The service will be officiated by Dr. James Towery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to West End Baptist Church PO Box 388, West Point, Mississippi 39773 or Palestine Cemetery, c/o Roxie Brock, 611 Joe Stevens Road, Cedar Bluff, Mississippi 39741.
