Melody Renea Gwathney Ravenhorst entered the gates of Heaven August 28, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Her big heart touched many people in her time on earth; her beauty and her smile will always be remembered by her friends and family.
Melody was born on September 17, 1974, in West Point, to the late John Wayne and Carolyn Trulove Gwathney. She was greeted by her sister Dawn who quickly became her best friend.
She was a 1991 graduate of West Point High School and completed an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences at East Mississippi Community College’s Mayhew Campus.
In May of 2000, Melody gave birth to a son, Dustin. His friends remember Melody as a loving, beautiful woman who accepted people for who they are and loved them accordingly. “Mama Mel’s” smile lit up a room, and her big heart and personality pulled friends to her.
Melody was employed as a Scheduler at Steel Dynamics, Inc. She was a dedicated employee at SDI, working through much of her illness. Before that, she worked at Pryor and Morrow Architects, where she met her future husband.
On October 7, 2017, Melody married the great love of her life, Corey Downs Ravenhorst. Their marriage was filled with love, travel, family, adventure, and laughter.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, from 12:00-2:00 P.M. at Calvert Funeral Home in West Point. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 P.M. with Mr. Cliff Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Bluff Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery in Cedar Bluff. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.
Melody is survived by her husband Corey Ravenhorst, son, Dustin (Lindsey) Gwathney, granddaughter, Lynleigh Rayne Gwathney, and sister, Dawn Gwathney (Scott Wilkes). The family extends special thanks to the Oncology Team at Kirklin Clinic UAB, Columbus Radiology, Dr. Godwin, Dr. Jones and staff, and Dr. Ned Miller and staff.
